Working definition of Visual Literacy

Visual literacy is the ability to read and write visual texts and images. Being visually literate means that individuals are able to comprehend images such as:

Visual literacy allows for individuals to convey and perceive messages. Today, advertisements have become a powerful visual literate tool which persuades potential buyers to “buy the latest iPod or laptop.” In the academic world, many teachers ask students to reinforce the material taught by presenting ideas using visuals.
